Description
As the dog days of late summer set in and most flowering plants are fading out from their summer performances, Hydrangea paniculata, commonly know by some as “peegee hydrangeas,” are just getting started and will continue into fall. The White Wedding Hydrangea produces abundant oversized, pillow-like clusters of white flowers atop sturdy stems on rounded shrubs of 5 to 6 feet in height and width. The flowers are excellent for cutting and use fresh or dried in indoor floral arrangements or for weddings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright rounded form 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the White Wedding Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a very colorful natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape or flowering shrub borders. An excellent candidate for pots, planters and other containers and a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 4a, where this Hydrangea variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know that it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The White Wedding Hydrangea is exceptionally easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot.  Almost any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility will do. White Wedding can take the heat at our location here in north-central Georgia, but it’s also exceptionally cold hardy, withstanding even the coldest winter temperatures as far north as USDA Zone 4a, where it will also tolerate full, all day sun. In southern zones 7 and below it will tolerate full sun but we’ve seen it perform and look its best with some filtered sun or dappled shade during the hottest hours of summer afternoons. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering. Too much shade and plants become floppy with diminished flowering.
Note:  White Wedding is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces its flowers from buds that are formed on “new wood” (the current season’s growth). This means you don’t want to prune them in late spring or summer when they’re preparing to bloom.
