Description
The Hummingbird Plant, also known as the Uruguayan Firecracker Plant, is a hummingbird’s dream come true! If attracting hummingbirds is one of your goals Dicliptera suberecta is a must for your garden.Â
Dicliptera suberecta is one of the few perennials from Uruguay that we grow and offer…makes you wonder what else might be there. This heat and drought tolerant, cold hardy perennial plant produces numerous clusters of electric orange, upright facing, tubular flowers throughout the warm season that are irresistible to hummingbirds. Equally attractive in the garden are the felty, silver-grey leaves that cover the 2 foot tall by 3 foot wide mound throughout the growing season.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Hummingbird Plant is the perfect addition to a hummingbird or nectar garden, mixed with other hummingbird attracting plants such as Salvia, Hardy Lantana and Butterfly Bush. It also makes a nice accent plant in home foundation plantings and perennial or rock gardens, or as a border plant along a sunny path or walkway. Perfect for pots, planters and other containers, which is nice for those of you north of USDA Zone 7a who can overwinter it indoors or in a greenhouse.
Suggested Spacing:Â 24 inches apart for mass plantings or solid border; 60 inches or more for space between plants
Note:Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where the Hummingbird Plant is not reliably winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy growing it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The Hummingbird Plant is very easy to grow. It’s not too picky about soil type but prefers a moist but well-drained soil. What it doesn’t like is a constantly soggy or wet soil, which can cause problems with the roots. It grows more dense and flowers more in full to mostly sun, however, will tolerate a fair amount of shade or filtered sun. We suggest at least 5 hours or more of direct sunlight for best flowering.Â
Note: Â In our gardens here in Zone 8 of north-central Georgia, we’ve seen the Hummingbird Plant survive temperatures as low as 3 degrees F. In zones 9 and 10 the plant will be evergreen. In zones 7 and 8 it may die back during colder winters to then reemerge strong in spring. If it dies back you can snip off the dead foliage and apply a light coat of mulch.

Completely satisfied with this purchase. The plants arrived promptly and in excellent shape. The packaging did a great job of protecting the plants and keeping the soil moist. Highly recommend.—————————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I planted the plants in a pot 2 weeks ago. They are growing well and survived a tropical storm this week. I had them tucked between other plants to protect them. They arrived in very good condition despite the heat. I am always pleased with the plants I order from Wilson Brothers.—————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! The Uruguayan Firecracker Hummingbird Plant arrived in outstanding condition and is doing great.————————-WBG Reply: Hi William, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Uruguayan Firecracker Hummingbird Plant. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come!
Great customer service from Wilson Bros on this plant. They weren’t happy with the condition of the plant because of the recent rain – so they called to explain their situation and offered to send me the plant for free (admittedly, I had placed two rather large orders) with the caveat that it really wasn’t up to their standards. Plant arrived looking ‘fine’ (perhaps not showing quite as much vitality as the other specimens I had ordered) and is doing very well.
This plant was packed to ship without causing any damage to the plant. The leaves were green and healthy. It bloomed quickly with bright orange flowers. I have bought other plants from Wilson Brothers, you can depend on them for quality, healthy, and established plants. ————————– WBG Reply: Hi Cheryl – Thanks so much for your review of the Hummingbird Plant and for the compliments! Plant arrived in beautiful condition. Can’t wait to see it bloom and have the hummers visit! —————– WBG Reply: Hi Joann – Thanks so much for your review of the Hummingbird Plant and we hope you and your hummingbirds enjoy it for years to come! 1st let me say customer service is OUTSTANDING, I gave this plant 2 stars based on the shipping, The first order the 2 pots were free floating in the box that was way to big, the plants were crushed down to even with the pot, called customer service and they immediately shipped out 2 new plants. Well when they arrived they were free floating and on their side, foliage was damage but not complete crushed. Now for the hardiness of this plant all 4 have been planted and are doing well the 1st order has not put out new growth and looks like it will survive, the replacement order is doing well too. So this plant can take a licking and come back. Again the customer service is EXCELLENT they had no problems about replacing the first order. I did not call about the second shipping since I did not think it was bad enough and the plants should be ok.. After this experience would I reorder – YES ———- WBG RESPONSE: Hi Mike – Thanks for providing your review. Happy to have the opportunity to serve you and we’re glad you provided us with this feedback. This way we can relay the information to our shipping staff and find a better way to pack this specific soft-stemmed perennial plant. We usually secure our ornamental shrubs and trees in the box using staples, and might see one order out of a thousand with damage due to an oversight by a staff member when packing. Not sure why they didn’t use the staples on these Hummingbird Plants? meet with our shipping manager to make sure we do a better job securing these in the box. You’re right about the toughness of the Hummingbird Plant…this proves it can take a beating and come back strong. Even then, we don’t like to see even one plant damaged in shipping due to something we could prevent! Let us know if there’s ever anything we can help you with or if there’s anything else we can improve on. – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
I purchased this plant from Direct Gardeners last years; it worked well. So, when I saw Wilson Bros had it this year, I bought another to go along with the first hummingbird plant. This plant works well facing North, West and East exposure, so it does get sun. It was packaged well, arrived safely. ——— WBG RESPONSE: Thanks so much for taking the time to provide us and visitors to Wilson Bros Gardens with your review. Thanks also for the tips you provided:-) We have several of the Hummingbird Plants growing throughout our gardens in full sun and some in part shade. The plants do equally as well but the one’s with more sun bloom a little more. The hummingbirds love them! Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service!
