Description
One of if not the best of the red foliage Panicums, the foliage of ‘Shenandoah’ Switch Grass emerges a handsome blue-green but then quickly runs to a deep burgundy-red by late spring to early summer. Forming narrow, erect clumps to about 3 feet tall, Shenandoah provides a fine vertical accent in the landscape. It forms an impressive upright clump to around 4 feet tall and maybe 3 feet wide that becomes topped in summer by finely-textured, reddish-pink flowers which hover over the foliage like an airy cloud. The flower panicles persist for months and are excellent for cutting and use in cut flower arrangements. Winter brings a fourth season of enjoyment as the rustling grass turns to cream tones. Songbirds and other wildlife with appreciate the tiny seeds and will use the sturdy foliage clumps as a cold weather shelter. One of our favorites!

Growing Preferences
A North American native grass, Switch Grass are very easy to grow in a wide range of soil, even clay, sandy and dry soils, though they prefer the soil to be moist. They don’t like an organically rich soil so there’s no need to add compost or humus to the native soil when planting. Switch Grass grow, best in full sun but will tolerate some light shade. It is generally noted for its stiff, columnar form, and typically retains its vertical shape throughout the growing season. That said, too much shade and plants might become floppy. Maintenance is minimal. Cut clumps back to the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
