Description

A unique Clematis with a nearly continuous bloom throughout the summer and into fall, ‘Sapphire Indigo’ provides stunning masses of indigo blue flowers with curvy and ruffled petals on a spreading and cascading shrub-like habit perfect for containers and hanging baskets or to cascade over walls like a groundcover. That said, it can also be trained to grow on low fences, trellises, rails and other structures. Excellent pair with climbing roses for a fantastic color display over an extended season.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Spreading or climbing 3 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the Sapphire Indigo Clematis is ideal for growing in large pots, planters, tubs or hanging baskets and can be trained to grow on low fences, trellises, rails and other structures. Also excellent as a ground cover plant to cascade down embankments and over retaining walls. Excellent for rambling around roses and other mid-size to large shrubs. Contrasts very well with pink flowering shrubs and trees. A fine addition to Clematis gardens, purple theme gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for groundcover or solid border

Growing Preferences

The Sapphire Indigo Clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It will prefer some shade or filtered sun in hotter climates of the South. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate an occasional watering in prolonged periods of dry weather. Make sure not to plant this one too deep as it tends to smother the plant. See pruning instructions just below.

Clematis Pruning Group 2

Clematis in Group 2 consist of all the early, large-flowered hybrid clematis that bloom in late spring or early summer and maybe again in late summer. Clematis in this group should be pruned lightly in late winter or early spring. Pruning consists of removing weak and crossing shoots then thinning down the plant to a structure of evenly spaced one and two year old stems. Cut each stem just above a pair of healthy buds. Alternatively, you can often force a flush of new growth from the base by cutting the vine back to 18 inches immediately after the flush of bloom.
