Most folks are familiar with Chamomile for its use in relaxing teas and such, but it is also an excellent plant for use in the landscape. Roman Chamomile, not to be confused with German Chamomile, is a low-growing, mat-forming, easy-to-grow and hardy evergreen perennial herb with lacy, fern-like green foliage that smells like a sour apple Jolly Rancher candy! Gardeners in England use it as a groundcover or to fill the gaps between stepping stones in paths. It also serves as a good soil cover in container gardens. Throughout summer and into fall, bright white daisy-like flowers with golden eyes rise just above the foliage attracting the attention of butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. The fragrant flowers and the leaves can be used in potpourri in combination with other dried flowers.

Though we’re not medical doctors or nutritionists, and would advise doing your own research before ingesting or using any plant on your body, as a medicinal herb, many use Chamomile in teas to aid digestion and act as a gentle sleep inducer. It is also said to be beneficial for treating minor burns such as sunburn, as its oils contain skin-regenerating flavonoids, and anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties that can help one renew and relax.
