Description
Always wanted a magnificent pampas Grass in your landscape but live too far north to grow one? Meet Ravenna Hardy Pampas Grass, a cold hardy species that stands up to temperatures down to -20F! Very similar to the less-hardy Pampas Grass, this hardy, large, and stately one shows off 18 to 24 inch flower plumes that rise on sturdy stems up to 12 feet tall above a 6 to 7 feet tall and wide mound of gracefully arching grey-green leaf blades. The plumes emerge a purple-bronze color in summer fading to a silvery color in fall and persisting well into winter and are great for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. The rustling sound the foliage makes when a breeze comes along can be quite calming. Exceptionally easy to grow and very drought tolerant when established, this one performs best in a soil that’s on the dry side and of low fertility. It doesn’t look or perform nearly as well in wet or fertile soils, which makes it a great choice for those more sterile spots where other plants won’t grow.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a large mound 6 feet tall and wide with flower plumes rising up to 12 feet tall, you’ll want to make sure to give this ornamental grass plenty of room to grow. Ravenna Hardy Pampas Grass is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or to form a natural barrier or hedge in sunny landscape borders. It looks especially nice near lakes and other bodies of water. Also useful to frame entryways or corners corners or to fill open walls in home foundation plantings. It makes for a nice solo or centerpiece in large containers of 18 inches or more in rim diameter. A fine addition to the ornamental grass garden, Zen gardens, cut flower gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:  Space 5 feet apart for hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Ravenna Hardy Pampas Grass is very easy to grow in most any moist but very well-drained to dry soil of low fertility and full to mostly sun. Avoid highly moist or wet soils of high fertility. Plants can be an annually cut back to near the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
