Description
If you love red you’re gonna love Ragin’ Red, a new and incredible native Dogwood selection that through the seasons displays brilliant red color in three ways: flower, spring and fall foliage, and berries, something we’ve never seen before on a dogwood. The color show begins in spring when the deepest red flowers of any dogwood put on a stunning floral display over a long period of weeks. As they begin to open the bracts (flowers) are an almost black to purple-red transitioning as they fully open to the deepest red of any red dogwood we’ve seen, darker than Cherokee Chief. Immediately following the bloom deep burgundy-red new leaves emerge that gradually transition to dark green painted with red. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the leaves gradually turn to brilliant burgundy-red with pops of orange and purple. As with other flowering dogwoods, abundant clusters of deep red berries are displayed in fall persisting well into winter providing cool season interest and a delectable delight for the birds. All grown up Ragin’ Red might reach 15 to 20 feet in height making it a fine selection for partially shaded small and large spaces and landscape borders.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and equally as wide, the Ragin’ Red Dogwood is ideal for use as a specimen in small to mid-sized garden spaces or in groupings or staggered rows in partially shaded landscape or woodland borders. We think dogwoods look and perform their best in sites that provide some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning and evening sun are what they prefer. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to woodland gardens, red theme gardens, wildlife gardens, native plant gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  25 feet or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
Dogwood trees are adaptable to many soil types, preferring a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Though Dogwood trees will tolerate full sun, we think they look and perform best with some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons. Maintenance is minimal to none. Except to remove a stray or broken branch, no pruning is necessary.
