Our favorite of the reblooming blue-flowering mophead Hydrangeas, Nantucket Blue was selected for its prolific blooming, vibrant bloom color and its ability to repeat bloom through summer and all the way to frost. Perhaps what’s most remarkable though, and what makes Nantucket stand out from the crowd of other mophead cultivars growing in our gardens, is its higher resistance to leaf spot. As most of us Hydrangea lovers know, by the middle to end of summer most  H. macrophylla cultivars will have developed leaf spots, at least a few but sometimes many, depending on the weather. It’s just something we learn to live with. But on our nursery and in our gardens, by the time most other cultivars have developed  a lot of leaf spots, Nantucket usually has few few if any. We’re not saying it doesn’t ever get leaf spots, but usually much fewer if any than other. 

As mentioned, from early summer to frost, Nantucket Hydrangea provides an abundance of large (up to 8-inch diameter), bold and beautiful blue, lavender-purple or pink flower clusters on dense rounded shrubs that might reach 5 to 6 feet tall and wide when all grown up. Flower color is up to you. Acidic soils produce blue flowers. Alkaline flowers produce pink flowers. Anything in between makes lavender to purple. Equally hardy and vigorous as it is beautiful, Nantucket aims to please!

Growing to 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Nantucket Hydrangea is useful as an accent, in small groupings, or as a colorful hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. It is also highly suitable for container culture and is ideal for use in cottage and cut flower gardens as well as blue or pink theme gardens.

Spacing:  4 feet apart for solid hedges;  8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Hydrangea are easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil. You choose the flower color. An acid soil will create blue flowers while a alkaline soil creates pink flowers. Anything in between makes lavender to purple. Learn more about soil pH and how to adjust it. The plants will tolerate full sun in northern zones however appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer southern zones. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering.
