Description
Perhaps the most magnificent of the mophead hydrangeas we’ve ever grown, Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Miss Saori’ is a recently developed hybrid that was awarded Flower of the Year at the Chelsea Flower Show for its beautiful blooms. From early summer to early fall it features large and abundant breathtakingly beautiful clusters of white, double-petalled, tiered florets with each petal edged in deep rose pink. Unlike many other mophead varieties, the flower color stays almost the same regardless of soil pH…more pink in alkaline soil and slightly purplish-pink in acid soils. The flowers stand out beautifully against the dark reddish tinted foliage which becomes deeper in color with more sun. It’ll handle the full sun in the northern range of its hardiness but will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon in the South. A compact selection, you can expect Miss Saori to form a well-rounded mound to 3 feet tall and equally as wide when all grown up, making her a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a low hedge where space allows. Miss Saori is definitely a head turner and the flowers can be enjoyed both in the garden and indoors in a vase.
Miss Saori was created by hydrangea breeder Mr. Irie of Kyoto, Japan. He named the plant after his wife,
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 3 feet tall and wide, the Miss Saori Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a colorful low hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to pink gardens, hydrangea gardens, cut flower gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  2.5 feet apart for solid hedges or borders;  6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Miss Saori Hydrangeas is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or better fertility and sun or part shade. The plants will tolerate full sun in cooler northern zones however will appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer southern zones 7-9. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering.
Note: Miss Saori Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds formed on old wood.
