Description
LA Peppermint Camellia is a wonderful variety from the 1800’s that has stood the test of time for good reasons. In late winter through early spring it produces an abundance of fragrant, eye-catching double flowers with white or soft pink petals randomly streaked in red or solid red or half red and half white flowers. As the plant ages it tends to produce many variations on the same plant. The striking flowers are set against a perfect backdrop of glossy, deep green foliage. The flowers and foliage are perfect for cutting to display in indoor floral arrangements float just one in a bowl of water.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 7 feet wide, the LA Peppermint Camellia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a hedge, background plant, or in groupings and is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this camellia grows lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small evergreen tree that serves well as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Great for cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, white or red theme gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter by those who live and garden above USDA Zone 7a, where this variety is not winter hardy. Find Your Zone
Suggested Spacing: 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

The Camilla arrived in perfect condition. It was well protected in a sturdy box and the pot was wrapped in plastic so as to retain soil and moisture around the roots. The LA Peppermint Camellia arrived in great condition and was packaged so well that even the Fed-Ex guy leaving the tall skinny box standing the wrong way (so one of them was 100% upside down) didn’t do any harm, not even loose dirt in the box. Awesome! The only odd part on my order was I didn’t get any emails with the order, the receipt, or the shipping info – just the follow up please review email …. but hey, it’s like Christmas in April.
