Description

Perhaps the most cold hardy gardenia on earth, the Fall In Love Gardenia is another fabulous Wilson Bros Introduction available exclusively from Wilson Bros Gardens. There’s a two-fold meaning as to why we named it “Fall In Love.” Aside from the fact that you’ll “fall in love” with its super-fragrant double flowers and the large and lustrous dark green leaves, Fall In Love blooms in both spring and “fall” in our gardens.
When grown in containers Fall In Love Gardenia blooms from mid to late spring through early summer and then reblooms in fall. When growing in the ground Fall In Love will bloom two to four cycles from late spring well into summer…the first two bloom cycles being heavy, and the third and forth cycles light to moderate. That said, on plants growing in the ground, in some years we’ve noticed light to moderate flowering in the fall, especially when the fall season is late to arrive. In USDA Zones 8b-9b, and possibly even farther south, a heavier bloom cycle can be expected in the months of October and November.
What do the flowers of the Fall In Love Gardenia smell like? Words simply can’t describe the cloud of intoxicating perfume and you can smell them from 100 feet away. One thing for sure, if there were other plants that produced flowers that smelled like those of the Fall In Love Gardenia they’d be a rage among gardeners as well.

Cold hardiness of the Fall In Love Gardenia is unrivaled. The parent plant is from an old home place in Macon, Georgia and, as of 2018, the original plant is over 60 years old – that’s old for a gardenia! Based on its performance in our gardens since 2008, we think the Fall In Love Gardenia might just be the most cold hardy Gardenia on earth. The plants in our gardens sailed right through the coldest winters (3 degrees F in 2013/14) with little to no cold damage or fading of foliage. The leaves remain dark green and lustrous year round. One of the plants in our gardens receives direct full sun until 4 o’clock in the afternoon and looks just as good as the ones that get the afternoon shade, which is typically what Gardenia prefer. This said, for those of you in Zones 7a-7b we suggest planting on an eastern wall or other site that provides protection for northwesterly winter winds.

Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense mound about 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide, the Fall In Love Gardenia  Fall In Love™ also serves well as a hedge around decks, patios and porches or grouped together in landscape beds, and is ideal for use in containers. Whatever you do, make sure to plant your Fall In Love Gardenia near outdoor sitting areas or open windows near the home where the fragrance can be enjoyed. Feel free to plant it anywhere in the landscape that gets at least 3 hours or more of direct sun each day.
Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for solid hedge;  8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Gardenia are exceptionally easy to grow in moist but well-drained soils of average fertility and part sun, preferably morning sun with some shade or filtered sun in the mid afternoon hours. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot or other plant diseases. The east side of the home or other site that provides protection from direct afternoon sun and northwest winds is a perfect spot.
Soil pH is important!
To flower their best and maintain deep green foliage color, all Gardenia require an acid to moderately acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.0 on the pH scale. If your soil is alkaline foliage will turn pale-green to yellow and flowering will be diminished.
Soil pH is a measurement of the alkalinity or acidity of soil and is measured on a scale of 1-14, with 7 as the neutral mark. Any measurement below 7 indicates acid soil conditions, and anything above 7 indicates alkaline. If you’re unsure about the pH of your soil and whether or not it’s suitable for growing Gardenia it’s a good idea to test the soil pH in the planting area.
You can quickly test soil pH with an inexpensive soil pH tester probe. To raise the pH (make more alkaline) you can add pelletized limestone to the soil. To lower the pH (make more acid) you can apply Soil Sulfur, Aluminum Sulfate, or Chelated Iron. Adding organic compost to the soil or using compost as mulch can also help to increase acidity and maintain acid soil conditions.

The plant arrived in great shape. Planted and is growing well even in the hot humid Richmond VA summer.
All plants ordered over the years from Wilson Bros are exceptional.. .———————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
All the Plants I bought from Wilson Brothers arrived in Excellent Condition and looking very Healthy… and are all doing very well in the ground now. I will definitely be buying more from them.. I’m trying to find Rare Cold-Hardy Varieties of sub-tropical Flowering Plants and Rare Fruit Trees that will handle Zone 6a-6b established here on our suburban property in New Jersey.. So far I have success with Camellias, and finally found a good Cold-Hardy Variety of Fig; Also a Red-Russian Pomegranate, some Persimmons; Cold-Hardy Hazelnut, Cold-Hardy Oranges like Flying Dragon aka Poncerus Trifoliata giving tons of fruit I make into drinks— and Paw-paws trees now fruiting profusely (although Pawpaws have no problem with the cold—but I like to mention them anyway, or else they feel left out !!) LOL——————————————-Wow! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I received my Fall In Love gardenia in perfect, healthy condition. I live near Macon, GA, and chose this gardenia specifically for that reason, seeing that this plant came to me from a local area, living and thriving in the same weather conditions. Before I even had a chance to plant it, it developed three flower buds. I am looking forward to the beautiful scented blooms very soon. Thank you Wilson’s, job well done!————————————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I had requested that the carrier deliver on a weekday and they did. Actually package came 2 days earlier ,but we were not home on weekends to accept packages. Plant was still green and vibrant . WBG is one nursery that grows varieties not offered by other growers (Gordlinia ‘Sweet Tea’) .The other source for ‘Fall in Love’ Gardenia is Diirect Garden and they are trialing it out .From what I could gather its growth rate is similar to ‘Chuck Hayes’. 4’ tall in six years . Also sold out. They don’t grow the plants themselves, but other growers provide the service. Definitely worth waiting for. It should do well considering the recent heat waves the NW has been getting.—————————————-We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂

The plants arrived very soon after placing my order and all three were in perfect condition. Packing was professionally done and my plants were very healthy. I immediately placed them in their permanent spots to get acclimated but have not actually planted them in the ground yet. Today I have blooms on all three plants. A FIVE STAR transaction from start to finish!!!!!————————–WBG Reply: Hi Tommy, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Fall In Love Gardenia. The plants are well packed for shipping and are extremely healthy upon arrival. I have been extremely pleased with all my purchases from Wilson Bros. Gardens. Because it is fall, I have just planted the gardenia, so it will be spring before I reap the full beauty. ——————- WBG Reply: Hi Judith – Thanks so much for your review of the Fall In Love Gardenia and we hope you enjoy it for years to come.
