Description
Unrivaled in its beauty among boxwoods, the Dwarf English Boxwood has been the most extensively planted boxwood in the United States over the past century. A dwarf that is perfect for and often used as a hedge, its small glossy green leaves provide a fine and delicate texture in the landscape. If left unpruned the shrub will grow to be about 3 feet tall to 4 feet wide at maturity. However, with its slow growth rate of only 1 inch per year it could take 40 years or more to achieve this size. It can be maintained at less than a foot in height and width over time, however shearing increases foliage density and therefore the chance of disease in some climates. Unlike many other boxwoods that prefer a sunny site, you might be happy to know that the Dwarf English Boxwood prefers life on the shady side. The plants in our gardens have thrived in a spot that receives maybe 2 hours of direct sunlight per day. More on that below.
Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Dwarf English Boxwood is ideal for use as a low hedge or for planting under low windows or accentuating entryways in home foundation plantings. Excellent for use in pots, planters and other containers with a rim diameter of 12 inches or more. A fine addition to English gardens and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  15 to 18 inches apart for solid hedges; 4.5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Dwarf English Boxwood prefers a moist but well drained soil and part shade. Constantly wet soils are a killer. Unlike many other boxwood varieties that like the sun, we suggest provide some shelter from the direct sun during the hot afternoon hours. Direct sun in the morning and evenings is fine.
